Felicidad en Fuerteventura

This windswept Isla Canaria has been nicknamed the Hawaii of Europe thanks to its volcanic geology, exceptional beaches, and some of the best water sports this side of the Atlantic.

We’ve only explored the northern end of this long island. Here are some of our favourite places and experiences, I would love to hear yours too!

KITE

💨 Be prepared for wind on the beaches of Fuerteventura. Seek out one of the stone shelters dotted along the island’s beaches to make a protected and fun base for the day. Our favourite beaches are Flag Beach for colourful kites, Playa del Moro for family friendly waves and swimming, and if you’re prepared to drive off‑road from El Toston lighthouse you’ll find the lagoons and hidden beaches of the North Shore.

SURF

🌊 Fuerteventura is all about the water sports for us. Flag Beach for kitesurfing, Playa de la Goleta in Corralejo to try wing foiling, and there are lots of surfing spots for all levels. I met the most wonderful surf instructor @tee_surf_fit at @ohanafitsurf who was super lovely and took me to some incredible surf breaks. We haven’t made it there yet but we’ve heard paddle boarding on nearby Isla de Lobos is brilliant too.

SKATE

🛹 With long smooth roads leading to the ocean, skating is a way of life in Fuerteventura. From surf skate lessons to longboard dancing you’ll find plenty of opportunities to get on wheels on the island.

EAT

🍽 Reserve a table on the terrace of La Vaca Azul in El Cotillo for a sunset fresh seafood dinner accompanied by the sound of crashing waves in the harbour.

The seafood is fresh and tasty and the sunset views and vibe was perfect. The kids loved the blue cow in the restaurant and walk a little further past the restaurant to find some stunning surf photography on the walls by local surf photographer Pablo Prieto.

SHOP

🧘🏼‍♀️ The cool little surf town of Lajares has a small artisan market on a Saturday morning, a selection of surf shops and some lovely stores such as Mouja selling baskets (a girl can never have too many), jewellery and homewear. The Clean Ocean Project, which works to keep the island's beautiful waters and beaches clean, sells eco-friendly clothes and products in its stores in El Cotillo, Corralejo and Lajares.

HIKE

🌋 If there isn’t any wind or waves to have fun with then a hike to the top of the Calderón Hondo volcano is breathtaking.
